AR-15 80% receiver tester

NFA control over machineguns is almost over?  Thank United States vs. Morgan.  Subscribe to this gentleman to help support his excellent work.

Once that law changes, I WILL PROBABLY NOT BE ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH DEMAND.

Due to the latest surge in 80% receivers that are out of specification, I designed a product that tests your unit prior to your starting any work.  This template is already included in the AR Intermediate, AR-10, and the AR PRO.

This unit indicates the overall width of the fire control cavity, the alignment of magazine well to bolt catch, back to rear takedown slot as well as depth of cut on the upper plane of the lower receiver.

The template should fit with only SLIGHT finger pressure, and with NO TWISTING on the rear tab.  Using a sharp PENCIL, draw around the template while it is on your receiver.  When you remove the template everything should look centered.  If there is an offset or an angular twist to either side (distance of the fire control cavity to the outer wall) figure out why before starting.  If it cannot be fixed, return your 80% receiver for either a swap or a refund from that vendor.

Perfectly aligned drawing, good 80% receiver

If your receiver is showing all of the lines as centered, you are ready to at least make a semi-auto receiver.  To make a select-fire receiver, you must first look into the rear takedown pin hole (1/4″) as shown below.

The rear tab should only be slightly exposed at the top of that hole takedown hole.  If it doesn’t clear the hole, so much the better.  IF IT IS EXPOSED MORE THAN THAT, YOUR RECEIVER HAS BEEN MILLED DOWN TOO FAR BY THE MANUFACTURER.  Drilling in the autosear pin holes risk not having enough metal over the crosspin and eventual failure of the metal, which in turn will cause malfunction.

Something to consider, do you actually think that big rifle manufacturers use only their best receivers to sell to the 80% market?  If they did, that would be an extremely poor business model.  I assure you, the less than perfect inventory is sold as 80% units on the internet and the really bad ones only end up in the ‘trash can’.  Keep that in mind when you find those deeply discounted units…..you always get what you pay for.  Like my grandfather used to say, “You can’t polish a turd, no matter how much you try, it will always be just a turd”.

Currently I also have a complete 80% AR jig/assembly system, an AR conversion jig, an 80% AR receiver tester, as well as an AK-47/74 Class II jig for the 80% pre-bent and heat treated receivers, an AK scope mount template, an H&K flat template, a semi to select fire jig for existing HK rifles, and a semi to select-fire conversion jig for the SEF trigger pack which does not corrupt a semi auto receiver, a Class II AK-47/74 / Galil conversion jig for semi to full conversion, a Galil 80% jig, a locked slide conversion (for suppressor use) for the GSG 1911-22 and a Ruger 10-22 80% jig (also with locked bolt drill-in locator) on-line now.
